Isle of Man TT Review 2015 DVD

Isle of Man TT Review 2015 DVD

The Isle of Man TT 2015 fuelled by Monster Energy was a record-breaking affair that had it all: sunshine, drama, excitement and a sensational comeback to rival Mike Hailwood’s.

Anticipation was high before the start of the race with an entry list that was a veritable “Who’s Who” of the World’s elite road racers.

Any of the top ten or so riders were in with a chance of a win in any of the solo classes and there were plenty of quality sidecar crews determined to make an impression on the podium places.

No fans can have left the Isle of Man disappointed with what unfolded – surely TT 2015 proved to be one of the best meetings of the 21st Century, and maybe of all time?

Lap and race records tumbled throughout the week, there were new faces on the podium and some that fans might have thought would never been seen on the top step again.

For once the Isle of Man was blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine for race week and it led to some of the closest racing ever seen on the 37.73 mile public road Mountain Course as heroes of the road like John McGuinness, Ian Hutchinson, Guy Martin and Michael Dunlop got down to business.

All-in-all it was as action-packed as anyone could wish for and throughout it all our cameras were on hand to catch the highlights.

With the best bits of all seven solo and both sidecar races, plus lots of the atmosphere away from the races, this is the comprehensive, indispensable Official Review of the Isle of Man TT 2015.

Magic of The TT – A century of racing over The Mountain

Magic of The TT – A century of racing over The Mountain

As the Isle of Man celebrates 100 years of the greatest road race in the world, the TT has come full circle — as the ultimate test of both motorcycle technology and the men who pit their sophisticated machines against the cruelest circuit on earth.

During that century, horsepower has soared from a handful, when two-wheelers began racing over The Mountain, to over 200 today.  Mac McDiarmid tells the whole story — history, circuits, machines, riders, races and risks, as well as the whole TT experience for armies of road race fans.

There can be no better author to write a celebration of the Isle of Man TT than Mac McDiarmid, whose Joey Dunlop tribute book received outstanding reviews and sales success.

As a former TT racer and the long-time TT correspondent of Motocourse, he has this race in his blood – he even lives on the Island. This evocative book presents a lavishly-illustrated collection of themed chapters commemorating the greatest motorcycle road-racing event in the world.

Moffett Field

Moffett Field

The looming immensity of Moffett Field’s Hangar One, built in 1933 to house the world’s largest—and last—rigid-frame dirigible, is an unforgettable South Bay landmark. The lighter-than-air Macon cost 2.5 million Depression-era dollars and could hold 100 men and five Sparrowhawk biplanes, yet its silvery bulk hovered silently or sailed up to 80 miles an hour. It drew crowds as it darkened the skies around Mountain View until it broke up in a storm two years later. Other blimp squadrons, equipped with carrier pigeons instead of biplanes, succeeded the Macon. Moffett Field has at various times served the navy, army, and the air force. Now home to the world’s largest wind tunnel, the NASA Ames Research Center also supports research that blazes the frontiers of supercomputing, robotics, space sciences, astrobiology, and nanotechnology.

“In Los Angeles, everyone is a star.” – Denzel Washington

For more than a century, seekers of sun and celebrity from around the world have flocked to this sprawling metropolis on the Pacific, which Dorothy Parker once described as “72 suburbs in search of a city.” But beyond the red-carpet reputation and Tinseltown trappings is a west coast wonderland teeming with unexpected cultural experiences, iconic architecture, gorgeous open spaces, quirky museums, hidden vistas, unconventional art, and obscure stories about the starlets, moguls, personalities, and players who have made Los Angeles their playground. This unusual guidebook explores 111 of the city’s most interesting and unknown places and experiences: wander a serpentine path in a spiritual quest of your own making; channel your inner cowboy at a tried and true honky tonk bar; pay homage to the Dude at the bungalow where the big Lebowski lived; turn your car tires into musical instruments on the country’s only ‘musical’ road; sleep with the ghosts of Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin; view a constellation of stars more vivid than anything Hollywood has to offer. From the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Angelenos and visitors will fall in love with the real Los Angeles. Adventures beckon. Surprises await. Off the Road

Off the Road

More and more people are hitting the road to the middle of nowhere. Along less-traveled paths they are heading up mountains and down dunes in converted mobile homes, campers, trucks, or vans. They are enjoying the drive and the view through mud-splattered windshields as much as the stops and evening campfires amid stunning terrain. Although many of us love living in cities, we have a growing longing to escape into nature. The outdoor scene is booming and many people are heading off to discover it with their own converted vehicles. This way, they can determine their own routes, itineraries, and pace, as well as how many challenges they’d like to meet along the way. After a day on the go, these multifunctional vehicles also serve as kitchens, campgrounds, and sleeping quarters that offer a great deal more improvised fun than a standard, perfectly equipped RV. Conventional luxuries are eschewed for the sake of greater freedom, tranquility, and adventure. Off the Road captures the special mood of such trips by solo travelers, couples, or families who are seeking an alternative to a more standard vacation or want to live their lives differently ―at least for a while. On the one hand, the book shows how familiar models, such as VW buses, Land Rovers, jeeps, and Toyotas are being rediscovered and repurposed for these exploits. On the other, it presents automotive dreams turned into customized, homey vehicles that offer tailgate breakfasts or roof beds to better admire the stars and that can, in an emergency, cross a river or drag a fallen tree from the road. Whether exploring the desert, showing children the world, or navigating polar landscapes, the journeys collected in Off the Road are as unique as the people who take them. From radical escapists to fans of nature looking for their next trip, the book celebrates the joy of being on the go on four wheels.

The Road Trip Book: 1001 Drives of a Lifetime

The Road Trip Book: 1001 Drives of a Lifetime

The world’s superlative road trips—scenic, thrilling, and memorable—in both natural and urban settings.

For anyone who has fallen under its spell, a car represents freedom and adventure. For decades, the American tradition of the road trip has been bound up with the idea of new possibilities and new horizons. This book is an indispensable guide to the most beautiful, breathtaking, extraordinary, and fun road trips the world has to offer.

Complete with road trips varying in length and level of challenge, from an epic transglobal route inspired by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s Long Way Round documentary series to a two-mile blast around Monaco’s F1 street circuit, there is something for any adventurer. Each entry provides information about distance, start and finish points, road surfaces, must-see stop-offs, detours, and other details to plan an unforgettable trip.

Entries are organized into three categories: Scenic, Adventure, and Culture. One can marvel at the views from Cape Town’s scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive or central California’s Pacific Coast Highway, but the thrill seeker might opt for the hair-raising ride through Montenegro’s coastal mountains to reach the medieval walled town of Sveti Stefan on the Adriatic. The culture category features routes inspired by film, literature, and history: re-create Thelma and Louise’s heart-pounding joyride (minus the final leap), savor Japan’s “Romance Road” through unspoiled small towns, or follow Jack Kerouac’s path from On the Road.

Tour de France: The Golden Age 1940’s – 1970’s

Tour de France: The Golden Age 1940’s – 1970’s

“Eagle of Toledo” and “The Cannibal,” “The Angel of the Mountains” and “Leatherhead.” A sporting event where the heroes earn nicknames like these must be incredibly powerful and alluring. The names reflect the nearly mythical aura surrounding the Tour de France. The men who bore these monikers, Federico Bahamontes and Eddy Merckx, Charly Gaul and Jean Robic, are only some of the protagonists representing the golden era of cycling who appear in this wonderful coffee table book. We see them on their legendary mountain stages, marked by inhuman strain and exertion, and as victors at the finish line, relieved and feted by cheering crowds. As appealing as these pictures from the 1940’s to the 1970’s are, some of their charm comes from the odd detail that makes a contemporary viewer smile: the leather helmet Jean Robic wore (ergo “Leatherhead”), or cyclists repairing and inflating tires themselves. Especially impressive are the photo series of epic duels, such as the one between Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor. Whether color or black and white, the photographs in this volume have a very special patina that allows the reader to revel in the greatest moments of a race that has enthralled millions of people since 1903.

Ridge Route The Road That United California

Ridge Route The Road That United California

Join me as we step back in time and tour California’s Scenic Ridge Route. When it opened in 1915 it was hailed as the “Magnus Opus” of mountain highway engineering. By-passed by the Ridge Alternate in 1933, it was left to the elements and all but forgotten. We will visit sites like Sanberg’s famous Summit Hotel where you would have seen Cadillacs, Packards and Studebakers during the road’s heyday. The sign out front read: “Truck Drivers and Dogs Not Allowed.” Not far from Sandberg’s we will locate the former site of the opulent Hotel Lebec, playground for Hollywood’s finest. Screenwriters, directors and famous movie stars like Clark Gable and Carol Lombard made it their destination. The Ridge Road House, the National Forest Inn and Kelly’s Half Way House are but a few of the other sites we will visit. Don’t take your eyes off the road; motorists faced 697 curves when navigating the famous mountain highway. Rare and historic photos of the road and establishments that lined its route will highlight our adventure. We will visit the location where “Queen Nell” had her shack and review how her sister chased General Petroleum’s pipeline crew from her property with a shotgun when they trampled her vineyard. We will follow “Ridge Route Annie’s” adventurous search for gold. Read how highwayman relived unsuspecting motorists of their valuables, out of control trucks careening down hill when their brakes failed and the 1922 blizzard that stranded scores of motorists in freezing weather. All of this in addition to early history on north – south routes and how Los Angeles had to entice the Butterfield Stage and later the Southern Pacific Railroad into Los Angeles.

While this book focuses on the 1915 Scenic Ridge Route, it also addresses the 1933 Ridge Alternate, (U.S. Highway 99) and the current I-5 Ridge Route highway.

The 5th revised edition was released on October 3rd 2015. It is a complete history of the Ridge Route from 1915 forward. Hardback, 410 pages (now with 287 pictures)

Driving With the Devil

Driving With the Devil

“Today’s NASCAR is a family sport with 75 million loyal fans, growing bigger and more mainstream by the day. Part Disney, part Vegas, part Barnum& Bailey, NASCAR is also a multi-billion dollar business and a cultural phenomenon that transcends geography, class, and gender. But dark secrets lurk in NASCAR’s past.

Driving with the Devil uncovers for the first time the true story behind NASCAR’s distant, moonshine-fueled origins and paints a rich portrait of the colorful men who created it. Long before the sport of stock-car racing even existed, young men in the rural, Depression-wracked South had figured out that cars and speed were tickets to a better life. With few options beyond the farm or factory, the best chance of escape was running moonshine. Bootlegging offered speed, adventure and wads of cash – if they survived. Driving with the Devil is the story of bootleggers whose empires grew during Prohibition and continued to thrive well after Repeal, and of drivers who thundered down dusty back roads with a car full of corn liquor, deftly out-running federal revenuers. The vehicle of choice was the Ford V-8, the hottest car of the 1930s, and ace mechanics tinkered with them until they could fly across mountain roads at 100 miles an hour.

After fighting in World War II, moonshiners transferred their skills to the rough, red-dirt race tracks of Dixie, and a national sport was born. In this dynamic era (1930s and 40s), three men with a passion for Ford V-8s – convicted felon Raymond Parks, foul-mouthed mechanic Red Vogt, and crippled war vet Red Byron, NASCAR’s first champion – emerged as the first stock car “”team.”” Theirs is the violent, poignant story of how moonshine and fast cars merged to create a new sport for the South to call its own.

Driving with the Devil is a fascinating look at the well-hidden historical connection between whiskey running and stock-car racing. NASCAR histories will tell you who led every lap of every race since the first official race was held in 1948. Driving with the Devil goes deeper to bring you the excitement, passions, crime, and death-defying feats of the wild, early days that NASCAR has carefully hidden from public view. In the tradition of Laura Hillenbrand’s Seabiscuit, this tale not only reveals a by-gone era of a beloved sport, but also the character of the country at a moment in time.”
